How Much Paint Do I Need?

Our most often asked question is 'How much product do I need to spray my project?' This is always a difficult one to answer, since each paint formula is different. Here are a few things to keep in mind when trying to decide how much to order. In most cases, you will need more product for silvers, yellows, oranges, and some reds since they do not have as much pigment in the formula as the darker colors like blacks, greys, blues, and darker greens. Back ground color is another element that needs to be considered. If the same color is being painted over an existing color not as much new paint will be needed as compared to changing drastically from one color to another, for example a red to a white. Another factor in determining coverage is technique, experienced painters generally need less paint, since they have fewer errors to correct (for example, sanding out a run and then applying a repair coat over the area). A starting estimate is 4 oz. of already reduced paint per panel or 3x3 area. Finally, take in consideration the points we listed above. The Spray Max aerosol paint is 10.5 oz.

Do I need a primer?
Primer is recommended if you are doing repair work, you are going direct to metal, or you are changing from one color to another, painting over one solid color, such as a grey primer, will give you a more even finished paint.

Yes, you can use an aerosol primer. However, use a regular automotive primer to be sure of compatibility. Almost done with the motorcycle. Thanks for the help on getting the right paint it looks great and was easy to put on. I used one can of the blue for the tank and seat/tail but a stupid bug landed in it as I was almost done. So I had to do some wet sanding and use the second can but 1 can would have been enough. The black took about a can, I had some left over when I was done.

I used the Spray Max 2K Single Stage Automotive Paint. I used exactly two cans to do the motorcycle gas tank, front and rear fenders and the two side panels. The color was dead-on, exactly what I wanted. I did use an automotive primer before I painted. The paint coverage was excellent, with very little over spray. I did, as suggested, use several light coats. I also did some wet sanding after the first coat. The only automotive painting I have done has been really small touch-ups. I would recommend this product to beginners or seasoned pros. It is very easy to use, as with any paint you just need to be patient. This would definitely rate as an EXCELLENT product!
